Online spending and mobile contactless payments are considered bonus purchases, and the list includes Grab, Shopee, McDelivery, Lazada, and many others.

UOB EVOL Credit Card: How Does The Cashback Work?
UOB EVOL Card’s cashback system is pretty straightforward:
|Categories||Cashback Rate||Cashback Cap|
|Contactless Mobile Payments||8%||$20|
|All Other Spend||0.3%||$20|
The UOB EVOL Card offers 8% cashback on online and mobile contactless purchases while giving 0.3% back on all other purchases.
For your convenience, we’ll refer to this category as “online expenditures,” broadly referring to all purchases made online, including those made through apps.
On the other hand, mobile contactless payments are made at a physical store using your mobile wallet.
Bear in mind that if you use Apple Pay to make an online purchase, the transaction will be included in the online spend section rather than the mobile contactless payments category.
Thus, keep track of your spending and cashback limit for each category, as you might not get your cashback should you hit the cashback cap.
You may wonder how much you must spend to qualify for bonus categories’ highest cashback.
To qualify for the maximum return rate of 8%, you must spend $250 on online purchases and $250 on mobile contactless payments.
The bonus categories should result in a $40 rewards total for the month.
Over that amount, you’ll only get 0.3% cashback. Sad.
Your other spends that do not fall under the bonus categories will also earn you 0.3% cashback.
Thus, I recommend pairing this card with an unlimited cashback card like the Standard Chartered Smart Credit Card.
UOB EVOL Credit Card: What is the Minimum Spend?
Okay, I know I said you’d need to spend $250 for each bonus category above, but if you don’t hit UOB EVOL Credit Card’s minimum spend, all your purchases only get a 0.3% cashback.
The minimum spend for the UOB EVOL Credit Card’s sweet, sweet 8% cashback is $600 monthly. Thus if you hit the minimum spend, you’ll get $40.30 monthly.
$20 each from online purchases and mobile contactless payments, and $0.30 from $100 spent after.
Before paying at kiosks and checking out online with your phone, ensure these transactions are eligible.
With this minimum spend, the effective cashback you’re getting is 6.72%, as you’re only getting $40.30 once you hit the minimum spend. The more you spend, the lesser your cashback is.
For example, if I spend $2,000 using the UOB EVOL Credit Card, I would get $20 + $20 + $4.20. This makes the effective cashback rate 2.21% – which is not too bad – but given the exclusions, it’s better to use another credit card once you hit the minimum spend.
UOB EVOL Credit Card: Exclusions
Even though the UOB EVOL Credit Card has relatively lax exclusions, you should be aware of these limitations.
- Medical expenses
- Utility bills
- Parking fees
- Reloading mobile wallets
- Paying insurance
- Paying tuition
- Paying fines
- Tax payments;
- Interest, fees, and other expenses to a bank;
- Shell and SPC petrol station transactions
- Transactions at UOB$ merchants where UOB$ are issued
Most exemptions, such as those for medical expenses, education costs, and services provided by the government, are typical of a credit card. The exclusion of UOB$ merchant transactions, however, is odd.
If you’re unaware of the UOB$ programme, it’s designed to give UOB cardholders instant payback on all purchases made at participating stores, year-round.
In addition to eating places, shopping stores, and travel companies, the list of participating companies is extremely extensive.
Here are some of the more well-known retailers:
- Cold Storage
- Crystal Jade Group
- Cathay Cineplexes
The complete list of excluded retailers is available in the UOB$ Programme.
UOB EVOL Credit Card: Disadvantages
Apart from the list of exclusions and the cashback cap of $20 for each bonus category, I think the UOB EVOL Credit Card has another disadvantage – its cashback system.
The cashback you earn in a given month is added to your account as credit the following month.
You cannot remove or exchange it for incentives; you may only use it to reduce your bill the following month – which is pretty standard, but I’d still think it’s a disadvantage.
Let me spend my cashback on other stuff, darn it!
However, for people who want simplicity and a lower overall credit card cost, this might not be a problem.

Some credit cards need excessive monthly spending to receive perks, which paradoxically may become a crutch for your finances.
With a reasonable monthly expenditure of S$600, you can start earning cashback with the UOB EVOL Credit Card.
Additionally, forget about those annoying yearly fees because you may avoid them by making just 3 purchases each month for a full year.
Supercharge your savings account
If you already have a UOB One Account, increase your interest rates by applying for the UOB EVOL Credit Card or any other UOB credit card.
Spending at least $500 on a credit card qualifies you for a higher interest rate, which can be as high as 2.5%.
Who is The UOB EVOL Credit Card Best For?
The UOB EVOL Card is perfect for young, tech-savvy Singaporeans who frequently shop online and make contactless payments.
Cardholders can earn rewards in several categories at exceptionally generous rates. There are few other credit cards that offer an 8% cash rebate on both mobile contactless purchases and online purchases.
The minimum spending requirement of $600 monthly is also not too onerous. If you’re able to hit the $600 monthly spend, then you should definitely consider this card.
